We are delighted to be able to highlight some great stories about co-operative businesses that are achieving social impact in their communities, including Unicorn Grocery, a wholefood grocery and worker co-operative in Manchester with a strong focus on organic, regional and fairly traded produce.
Not only is it doing well in the grocery industry but it also shares its experience and expertise with start up co-operatives. In 2011 it published the ‘Grow a Grocery’ guide, which it has made available free. It is involved at regional and national level in the co-operative movement and donated about 13% of its pre-tax profits to local and international projects last year. Surely Unicorn Grocery is a beacon of a truly responsible co-operative acting in a social responsible manner.
