How many followers do you have on Twitter?
Most social media professionals would say that is the wrong question to ask – and in many ways I agree with them. Who cares if you 10,000 followers if not a single one is reading your updates, engaging with you or buying your product or services? Clearly quality followers are more important than quantity.
But … yes there is a ‘but’.
When we look at a person’s profile on Twitter, rightly or wrongly, one of the things we will look at and use to form a judgement on an individual we don’t know personally is, how many followers they have.
We all know we shouldn’t, we all know that it doesn’t necessarily mean anything, but we do it nevertheless. A large number of followers looks impressive and gives us a sense that this person must be popular, or important in some way. If nothing else we wonder what they have done that’s so amazing that warrants so many followers. We wonder why we don’t have as many. It’s just human nature. If it wasn’t then one-upmanship, keeping up with the Joneses and the “mine is bigger than yours” games wouldn’t exist.
Before you dismiss this idea as nonsense, take a moment to ask yourself, honestly, how you’d feel if you looked at an unknown profile and the person had 10 followers and you looked at another and they had 10,000? Maybe you get a reaction to the numbers I quote? Perhaps you think I am choosing unfair numbers – 10 is too low and 10,000 is too high. Either way you had a reaction to the number of followers – and that’s the important part to remember. The number creates a reaction.
So, when it comes to Twitter, I believe you should consider playing both the quality and the quantity game – both have a place in the Twitter-verse and a place in your social media marketing mix.
