Equality & Diversity

We can all remember a time when we either felt or witnessed segregation in one form or another or have found barriers standing in our way, have been told we are too tall, too short, too young or too old. Thanks to the Equality Act 2010 many of these barriers have been removed and the work place has become a much healthier environment for it.

Diversity leads to opening up new channels of thought, empowers people in new ways, fosters opportunities that were not previously there before and diversity in the workplace can lend to a new and inspired way of thinking.

People from other cultural backgrounds can often give a different perspective on something opening up new slants or perceptions, things can be looked at and considered in new ways or from different angles, bringing in new or previously unconsidered values.

Not many things can be considered more productive than working in a diverse environment due to the way productivity can be assisted through new and fresh thinking bringing together a varied methodical approach.

The concept of diversity encompasses acceptance and respect. It means understanding that each individual is unique, and recognizing our individual differences. These can be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies. It is the exploration of these differences in a safe, positive, and nurturing environment. It is about understanding each other and moving beyond simple tolerance to embracing and celebrating the rich dimensions of diversity contained within each individual. Therefore to work in this environment can be enriching and encompassing.

There are 7.16 billion people in the world with five ethnic races and over twenty one major religions- imagine the scope for thinking, debating and creativity. Mix this together with people with varying disabilities, ages, orientation and you have created a workplace of dynamic capability, opening up new avenues of exploration and new channels of thought that caters to the needs of everyone.

It is healthy to face challenges and to debate over concepts and ideas. It is both healthy and productive to consider the views of others and to explore fresh ways of thinking. By creating a workplace that is rich in diversity you are fostering a true and wholesome picture of modern society incorporating people from all walks of life.
