Psychological Profiling

In July my two main activities were running Business Breakthrough Strategy Sessions with entrepreneurs, and carrying out psychological profiles of entrepreneurs, leaders, and of teams. Both activities fascinating and enjoyable.

Entrepreneurs have been profiled by many people over the decades, including Napoleon Hill for his book ‘Think & Grow Rich’. What makes successful entrepreneurs different from the majority? It isn’t just about brains or talent, it’s about leveraging abilities, being persistent in pursuing that dream, and being resilient whenever they hit a set-back. Success is 80% psychology and 20% strategy and action. Let’s take a look at some things successful entrepreneurs have in common.

1. The Dream Factor
Desire is built through dreaming bigger dreams. Entrepreneurs see very clearly opportunities, possibilities and potentialities. They build their vision firstly in their imagination, and then in reality. The majority of people don’t visualize with the same clarity and focus. With great imagination comes the release within of a great force of desire that drives the entrepreneur forward. The bigger dream is broken down into smaller goals, linked together with a strategy that takes them over the rainbow bridge to their bigger destiny. They then pursue their dream with passion, and take aligned action in the pursuit of their vision. In my work with entrepreneurs I’ve taken them through a process I call ‘The DreamWalker’ which walks them into the heart of their bigger dream and bigger destiny, overcoming blocks that often get in the way. This dream factor is often linked with more creativity and more innovation and a willingness to embrace new ideas.

2. The Focus Factor

Successful entrepreneurs are highly self-motivated, conscientious with disciplined habits and patterns of behaviour that many others don’t. They focus and do daily actions that lead them to their vision. They may not always want to do them, but they do them nevertheless, and can do what M Scott Peck called ‘delay of gratification’, taking the longer-term view, rather than going for a momentary pleasure. They have a high level of energy and a drive that sets them apart from others. As Buckminster Fuller said ‘The moment you choose to do what you really want to do, it’s a different kind of life.’ They have courage and commitment, and they are competitive.

3. The Faith Factor
Faith is powerful software for the mind. Successful entrepreneurs have an intense feeling of faith in the dream becoming the reality, and a faith in their own ability to make what they want to have happen, happen. Faith has the power to overcomes all other mind viruses, it enhances courage and diminishes fear. It creates its own attractor field. I encourage you to aligning with your highest energy and get yourself the faith mindset. Let faith be your constant companion. Believe. And believe in yourself. Just about everything stems from your beliefs. It was the billionaire John Asseraf who said ‘You will never ever ever outperform your self-image.’ Interestingly more women than men have lower self-image, and underestimate their own abilities – so every woman reading this get that self-belief going pronto!

4. The Risk Factor
In changing times, it’s tempting to forsake your bigger dreams. There’s a tendency to play smaller, to take fewer risks, to play it safer. However Harvard Business School’s Professor Alexander Zelaznick says that successful entrepreneurs appreciated risk in a different way to most people. He said that, unlike most people, they were less able to ‘generate more unpleasant possibilities’ of risk-taking. Simply put, successful entrepreneurs have trouble imagining failure. Most people can come up with limitless possibilities in why and how they may fail, which consequently affects their fear factor, and stymies their own progress. They’re in their own way. Successful entrepreneurs have a belief that they are in control of their destiny, this helps them take calculated risks. Think about it – if you fill your mind with fearful thoughts your body will respond as if what you are imagining, is an actual reality. Those feelings will steer you away from risk-taking, compromising your dreams and your destiny. Unlike successful entrepreneurs, most people are more afraid, making them grasp for security and safety, and making them much more risk-averse. Some are success averse too, imagining all sorts of negative ripple effects from being successful, which successfully steers them away from …. success! The land of predictable misery is sometimes preferable to the land of change.

5. The Charisma Factor
Successful entrepreneurs have a persuasive positive personality, strong social skills, and a passion and enthusiasm that gives them personal power, makes them stand out from the crowd, and helps them influence and convince others. They have referential power and the ability to get others to work for them. They influence through personal power, enthusiasm and passion. They understand their business, their market, their clients, their staff, and get the best from people.

6. The Independence Factor

There is a strongly independent factor, a maverick factor in successful entrepreneurs and a high need for achievement, power and control. There is a price to nice and wanting to be liked. Successful entrepreneurs care less about what others think and more about what they think. In NLP terms, their metaprogram would be a ‘self’ rather than ‘other’ preference, an ‘internal’ rather than ‘external’ driver. Some people are raised as people pleasers and it’s harder for them to plough forward in a focused way on pursuing their passions and dreams. Sometimes you just gotta do what you just gotta do!

7. The Resilience Factor
Successful entrepreneurs have grit and a growth mindset and a drive to learn from what happens. They ‘course correct’ (Maxwell Maltz) as they go. They interpret events from a learning perspective and incorporate the learning into their actions, which boosts their motivation, tenacity, and resilience. Many people have a fixed mindset, rather than a growth one which leads the to see their talents and abilities as being fixed and they engage in protected behaviours to avoid situations where they may be challenged and risk failure. One thing to remember is that mindset can be changed at any time of life, and results will flow from it one way or the other. With a growth mindset, setbacks are seen as learning opportunities, promoting growth, encouraging problem solving, creativity and innovation.

Keep Growing & Seek A Great Coach/Mentor
There is a difference between having an entrepreneurial spirit and being a successful entrepreneur. Success is 80% psychology, 20% strategy and action. Everyone can get better, so choose someone to work with to improve your results by improving the way you think and work. It was Dr Richard Bandler who said ‘You’re either getting better, or you’re getting worse! Staying the same is getting worse!’ Remember, if you keep doing what you’re doing you keep getting what you’re getting.   1. Excellent Kath. Truly inspiring and informative. Thank you. The phrase “who polces the police” springs to mind with respect to mentoring – who mentors the mentor? I think I may know the answer to that!
