August Guest Editorial – Jackie Cameron

When Karen asked me if I would guest edit the 3rdi Magazine edition for August I had no idea what I was letting myself in for yet I accepted right away. Maybe it was because the topic for this edition is Youth Enterprise which is dear to my heart and I always look for an opportunity to highlight and showcase what young people are up to.

When I asked her for a guide for guest editors she smiled and I then knew that we were going to “co-create” one.

So here it is – the edition I guest edited.

Although I would have liked to have been able to include articles written by some young people at this time of year pinning them down proved to be a bigger challenge than time permitted so instead I called on the people I knew were involved in working with young people on enterprise projects and whose passion would shine through.

I breathed a sigh of relief when I was able to press the “send” button to Phil who was collating the content in Karen’s absence on holiday but on reflection I realise that I have really enjoyed being part of something like the 3rdi magazine on a bigger scale than my usual “column”

Firstly I took some time to dip into the archive of content and remind myself of the interesting and wide range of contributions that is available at the click of a mouse.

Secondly I reconnected with people whose work I admire and asked them to write something which would both tell powerful stories and highlight current projects.

Thirdly I stepped back for a bit and looked at how and what I write and for what purpose.

My blog was born in September 2006 at a time when there were far fewer blogs and indeed social media was not as much a part of our everyday lives as it is now. Five years is a long time in the online world! The reach for anyone who chooses to write and publish their material online is vast but there is of course the challenge of being noticed in a sea of other blog posts and articles.

Becoming a regular contributor of the 3rdi magazine had given me an opportunity to reach further than my blog and other social media activity does and I am grateful to Karen for that.

And you know – if I can do it so can you.
