As humans we have the ability to use our minds to reason, follow instructions or act out of habit. At the same time we can use our intuition or feelings to guide us. The two appear to work together where our mind provides us with objectivity, rational and explanation whilst our intuition provides us with an, in the moment, response that relies on our collective experience of life and possibly beyond.
Our mind is limited to what currently makes sense and our intuition can lead to decisions that cannot be explained. Sometimes we live more out of our intuition and other times from our minds. Whilst many of us will fall in love out of feelings rather than logic, it is interesting to explore how we use the balance of reason and intuition in other areas of our lives.
Intuition can be defined as ability to know something immediately, without the need for conscious reasoning. It is as though our soul, sub-conscious or inner being can somehow tap into resources that can guide us through life.
Perhaps our intuition comes from connecting to the forces of nature in a way that brings a certain truth and clarity to a situation. Perhaps it appears through a divine connection or by tapping into a field of mass consciousness. Intuition allows us to step out of our normal logic, learnt responses and reasoning that can confuse, mislead or hold us back in established patterns of behavior or thinking, and free us up to new possibilities. In this sense intuition comes from following our heart rather than our head.
Greater trust of our intuition can support us in being spontaneous, authentic, true to ourselves, in the moment, connected and opening up to new possibilities.
One of the ways we suppress our intuition is through beliefs in concepts, dogmas or rules. If our belief is strong enough we will overrule our intuitive feelings. We may learn through ideas, principles and theories but when we want to be sensitive to our intuition it helps to let go of our beliefs, at least for a while.
For example, when we learn to swim we may start with a life vest or arm supports. This helps us get used the water, work on our swimming techniques, build up confidence and practice. At some point we can safely discard the vest or supports and swim on our own. If we do not take this step the vest or supports actually hold us back. It is only when we leave them behind that we can swim fast, dive and swim underwater. All concepts, doctrines and ideas are similar to the swimming vest or supports. They can be useful and helpful at the beginning of a new journey in life but at some point they will hold us back as they are fixed and limiting.
Concepts, beliefs and rules often come from other people. By adhering to them we risk living out other people’s beliefs. This could come from our teachers, parents, colleagues or friends. At some point do we want to escape all this and reclaim our lives?
By trusting in our intuition we have an opportunity to switch from being reliant on others for inspiration, guidance and information to being self reliant and free. Of course we can always go back to getting help when needed, whilst having the choice for how long we want to live out of other people’s ideas.
We can enhance our intuition by engaging in any creative pursuits where we feel free to follow our heart. Opportunities to develop our intuition include cooking, art, music, gardening, creative writing, arranging the home, decorating and drama.
