This month Simon talks about living in an elastic, malleable, flexible universe where even time and gravity change.

The human heart can be thought to simply be an organ that pumps blood around the body, however, many cultures have long held the heart to be home of our emotions, love and feelings. Science is also suggesting that our heart may have an intelligence of its own and be the centre of a complex network of messages and signals. The heart provides our body with its rhythm.

LOVE
We may sense that feeling of love reside close to our hearts. A sensation of love can feel as though it spreads from our chest to our heads and abdomen. Similarly we might feel that emotions in general are primarily experienced in our hearts. Writing of all kinds through time have associated love with the heart. It is through our hearts and the feeling of love that we make some of our most important decisions in life. We are often led by our hearts into choosing who to start a family with and who to share our lives with.

EMOTIONS AND MIND
Our minds and hearts can be seen to have a relationship where the heart expresses love, emotions and feelings, whilst the mind takes on the more objective role of analysis, reason, logic, interpretation, calculation and thinking. This complimentary, symbiotic relationship allows us to embrace the subjective and objective and combines to provide us with intuition. Sometimes our minds can take over and submerge our hearts denying us the emotional responses and expression that can make human interaction such a powerful experience. It is also possible that emotional pain and hurt in the past leaves us fearful of really opening ourselves up to feeling the emotions in our hearts.

MESSAGES AND SIGNALS
Emerging research suggests that our heart may be continually sending out and receiving electrical signals hundreds of times faster than our nervous system. It is thought that our heart may have an intelligence of its own that helps us connect to the world around us. It may be that the heart allows us to sense the world around us in a way that we can only currently describe as a feeling. The feeling that someone is behind us, the feeling the we are being watched or the feeling that we are connected to the world around us. Our heart appears to play a part in trust, self belief, courage and passion.

CHAKRAS AND PULSES
In India the human body is viewed as having seven energy centres called chakras with the heart chakra being the in the centre. Here the heart is the meeting point between the physical and mental. The idea being that our emotions are fed by our state of mind and our physical condition. In turn emotions emanate from our hearts influencing our thoughts and physical energy.

In China human energy is considered to move through the body along paths called meridians. The flow of energy is thought to be reflected in the pulse. Taking our pulse from somewhere like our wrist connects us to the feeling of each heartbeat. We can feel how fast our heart beats and with practice feel the signature of each beat, whether it feels smooth, rounded, driven, sharp, strong, calm or restful. This connects us to the way our heart contracts and relaxes and to what kind of rhythm the heart sends out through our body.

MEDITATION
If we have reached a state where we are less aware of our heart, feel disconnected from it or that our mind has become dominant we can explore ways to open up our heart and become more connected to our emotions. For me the most effective way so far has been through meditation. During a short meditation my mind becomes quieter and in this moment I find it easier to feel my heart. Through this I can slowly become more aware of feeling of love and other emotions that I had previously suppressed.

The meditation I use most is to simply start each breath with my mind and feel it. As I breathe in I am aware of my nose feeling cooler and then warmer as I breath out. If my mind wanders I simply start a new breath.

CONNECTION
Over time I have enjoyed exploring my emotions and making an effort to be aware of my feelings. Through greater awareness of my emotions I have enjoyed a greater connection to my heart. Ultimately this has led to greater feelings of love.
